How In The Heck Do You Style Button Downs?

This question was more or less posed to me by one of my wonderful Instagram followers. She more or less asked me to write a post on how I style button down shirts, so here I am more or less obliging. There are a ton of ways to wear button downs, and although I don't own nearly as many as I used to (you'll see a lot of these photos are first-year Yep, It's Prep), I do wear them for business casual events or when I'm feeling like a badass housewife (yes, I have badass housewife moments as a single 22 year old, usually when vacuuming).

OPTION #1: TUCK IT INTO A SKIRT

This so happens to be one of my favorite ways to wear a button down, but it can be trickier–– the button down has to be the perfect fit so it tucks correctly. It should be not too big or else it will be gaping, but not too tight so the buttons are not pulling. I usually opt to pair a skirt and button down with loafers or flats.

OPTION #2: TUCK IT INTO SHORTS (OR JEANS)

I personally for the life of me cannot master wearing a button down tucked into jeans (it has to do with having an incredibly short torso), but if you can you should. For some reason, I can get away with tucking light and airy button downs into short shorts. It's the perfect, effortless look for transitioning from summer into fall.

OPTION #3: LAYER ONE FOR FALL

This is a great way to style a button down because you can really mix and match different layers. When I think of fall, I think of a button down, jeans, boots, and a great sweater/jacket thrown over to top off the overall look.

OPTION #4: DON'T TUCK IT INTO A SKIRT

Disregard what I said a few minutes ago about tucking the thing in–– yank your shirt tail out and throw a sweater over the look, or better yet, just tie it up. Both looks are fun but lack complexity, for the perfect effortless look.

OPTION #5: WEAR IT PLAIN JANE STYLE

There's absolutely no shame to throwing on a button down and jeans and just leaving the thing as it is. Sometimes, you need a no-frills classic look, and this is most definitely it. When I wear them plain, I sometimes like to size up for an oversized, "I just borrowed my non-existent boyfriend's shirt" look.

OPTION #6: WEAR IT UNDER OVERALLS

No example photos here–– I sadly have not found a pair of long overalls that I love enough to try this look, but now I am really determined to try and pull it off. Maybe I will try the look with my white Madewell overall shorts–– screw the no-white-after-Labor-Day rule, I have never followed it anyway! Do I have you craving button down shirts yet?
